Last Friday, the Economic Development Committee for the City of Toronto deftly chaired by Cllr. Michael Thompson met to cover off 17 items on a packed agenda. reBOOT Canada was there to learn about the future of internet access and technology in the City – which was addressed in agenda items 6.14 and 6.15 – anchored by Councillor Josh Matlow’s championing of free public internet access in support of an innovative and inviting city. The city is considering a Connectivity Advisory Group, and we think any steps to building a city-wide connectivity
strategy, engaging prime stake holders and opening a discussion about the appropriate allocation of resources in this regard is a positive one. We really hope people see public internet as something that supports economic opportunities, skills development and higher civic engagement, in addition to tourism and positioning the city as an innovation centre. Read Councillor Matlow’s motion here and stay tuned for developments.
So what’s the connection with the picture? Another agenda item at the EDC meeting was recognition of the Maple Leaf Forever Guitar Foundation - founded by Toronto musician Colin Cripps (with Cllrs. Fragadakis and Fletcher and Mayor Tory in the picture) - who led an initiative to reBOOT wood salvaged from the silver maple that inspired the song Maple Leaf Forever by Alexander Muir. reBOOT Canada loves helping people with computers and tech and loves great ideas about getting meaning and value from things that might otherwise be ignored and abandoned. reBOOT Canada also loves cool guitars. A lot. So congratulations to Mr. Cripps and the team behind the Maple Leaf Forever guitars and congratulations to the city for supporting really great ideas!
