We're 6 months into 2015 and here's a quick update: so far this year, we've provided over 90 computers to individuals receiving social assistance and to community organizations. This three times what we did last year during the same period - which is great - but just under a 1 million people receive social assistance in Ontario alone, and having access to computer, software and internet is integral to their skills development, job search and community participation, so there's a lot of work to do.
Who do our our reSOURCE and reSTART programs serve? L is relatively new to Canada, has dependents and pursuing studies at the university level and participating in student organizations while receiving Ontario Works and trying to establish her network here. reBOOT Canada was able to provide her with a refurbished laptop approximately 6 years old, which was part of a large donation from Scotiabank. A was unable to work in a conventional setting and receiving ODSP when he began to explore freelance creative writing and journalism as a potential career. His computer, containing drafts, items and proposals he was working on failed suddenly. reBOOT Canada was able to recover the content from the computer and provide him with a replacement desktop, including licensed versions of Word and Excel he required to manage his entry into the professional publishing. These are a couple of anonymous but real examples. Thanks to all the donors across Ontario, please check back to the website often for more stories of how your donation is helping. Please note reBOOT Canada will be closed on Monday, August 3 for the Civic Holiday, reopening at 9am Tuesday August 4.
